Official ticket or a reseller tour?

Every reseller tour uses the same Statue City Cruises ferry and the same security line. What you pay extra for is a guide, and sometimes a pedestal ticket the reseller booked in advance. No one can skip the security screening: tours sold as “fast track” or “reserved ferry” give priority boarding only. Crown access is almost never sold by resellers, so book the crown on the official site.

Crown or pedestal sold out? What you can still do

  • Take General Admission. You still walk around the statue, see the museum and visit Ellis Island. Only the inside of the monument is closed to you.
  • Book a tour that includes the pedestal. Some tours hold pedestal tickets after the official site is sold out; check the “Pedestal” column in the comparison below.
  • Check again early in the morning. Cancelled pedestal and crown tickets go back on sale on the official site.
  • Ride the Staten Island Ferry for free. It runs 24/7, takes about 25 minutes and passes the statue (stand on the right side leaving Manhattan). It does not stop at Liberty Island.
  • Take a harbor cruise. Circle Line’s Statue of Liberty cruise costs about $29 and passes close by, without landing.

Crown ticket rules

  • 377 steps from the base, including a 162-step narrow spiral above the pedestal. There is no elevator to the crown.
  • Up to 4 crown tickets per order, and 1 crown reservation per person every 6 months.
  • Names cannot be changed. Everyone 18 and over shows photo ID that matches the ticket, and the card holder must be there to collect them.
  • Children must be at least 42 in (107 cm) tall and cannot be carried.
  • Bring only a phone, a camera, water in a plastic bottle and medicine. Everything else goes in a locker (25¢ coins; change machines take $1 and $5 bills).

Where the ferry leaves from

  • Battery Park, Manhattan: ticket office and security inside Castle Clinton. Subway: South Ferry (1), Bowling Green (4, 5), Whitehall St (R, W).
  • Liberty State Park, Jersey City: 1 Audrey Zapp Dr, with parking on site and usually shorter lines. This departure usually pauses in winter (in 2025 from January 6 to March 7).
  • Plan most of a day for both islands. Take an early ferry: the security line can take an hour or more on summer weekends.
  • Ignore street sellers around Battery Park. The National Park Service warns they are not authorized, and most sell harbor cruises that do not stop at the statue.
